Hello,
I want to buy a gtx 580 but I am not sure if my system will handle it, I am currently running a gtx 260. I have got the following g41m motherboard, 2,5 ghz Quad core cpu (775) socket win 7 64 bit, 600w power supply, 4 gig ddr 2 memory. Please can you give me advice. Regards

Yes a GTX580 will work on your rig but I don't recommend it because its overkill for most games. A GTX560 or GTX570 should last a few years and uses less power.

What is the resolution of your monitor???

1. Your CPU will be a bottleneck. GTX 460 will be a much cheaper that your CPU will not bottleneck significantly.
2. What power supply is it? (Brand, Model, Amperage on 12V rails (do not just add Amperage together)

@cplschuch: Is your proccesor overclocked???
A GTX460 would do fine with most games but isn't future proof enough :D ( At least from my point of view )

The CPU will be a bottleneck on a handful of games. However, this is a VERY power hungry card, which is why some people shy away from it, unless there's money to literally blow. Comparable future cards should use far less energy, which is why it's not considered the 'future proof' card across unanimously.

I would recommend a 460, 560, or 470 as an alternative, though the prices jumping around they way they have, be careful to get the right card for the right price.

With outdated processor it just doesn't make much sense to put in an expensive video card unless of course one plans to reuse the card in a new build in a not so far away future. Again, he may need a different power supply if it is not from a quality brand.

GTX460 is cheap nowdays and if his processor is overclocked, it should lessen the bottleneck( correct me if i'm wrong )

I was talking about 580 as an expensive video card that doesn't make sense. However, 460 is a nice match for his processor. Actually, 560 may make sense if he games on 1080p or above.

your processor will bottleneck the card a lot. GTX460 is more reasonable choice but even that card will be bottlenecked by your CPU. the most important in pc build is balance. if you really want to take GTX580, suggest you to get at least i5 760 or something comparable. and make sure you have PSU with high efficiency. 600w generic PSU won't be able too feed GTX580

Trying to overclock the CPU to 2.8GHz could help nicely, while also switching the 580 idea for a 560. The 560 is more then capable enough for gaming, but if you were to plan to upgrade your whole computer I would then say go for a 570 instead of the 580.
The 560 should work fine under your psu as well, but does it have 2x6pin cables?
