DDR2 or DDR3

Hello, I have a ASUS P5N-T Deluxe with a e6850 and 4gig ddr2 1066. I would like to upgrade to 8gig ram, it would cost me around 75$ for the upgrade it. But, should i get a new mobo (ASUS P5G41T-M LX) and put 8gig ddr3 1333 instead for 40$ more? Thank you.

More about ddr2 ddr3
  1. i dont see a point of upgrading your old mobo to suit faster ram
when upgrading get the newest chipset/cpu/ram combo
  2. I understand your point alvine. But my point is, I want 8gig ram instead of 4, and for now a don't want to spend 500-1000$ on a new computer. I play BF3 and the game is more stable with 8gig then 4 and the loading screens are much faster. I want to know if the ddr3 worth the 40$ more.

OK, and do u have x64 bit windows too?
  4. OK, than are fine. I just make sure u have it : )
  5. But, looking at your mobo, u can use ...

    4 x DIMM, Max. 8 GB, DDR2 1200/1066/800/667 Non-ECC,Un-buffered Memory
    Dual Channel memory architecture
  6. How much it will cost u , the new mobo + the RAM?
  7. 4 gig DDR2 1066 86$
    8 gig DDR3 1333 + mobo 126$
  8. And the mobo?
  9. e6850 is a dual core. upgrading to a quad core will benefit you more
  10. It's a P5G41T-M LX 60$+tax and the ram is Kingston HyperX Blu 8gig 1333 50$+tax
  11. I'm getting a q9550 from a friend
  12. There will be little speed increase to justify it, but it is not an expensive purchase, it is fine to do it.

    Do to DDR2 expensiveness vs DDR3 : )
  13. That C2Q will increase the power, but one more thing u can do.

Get an SSD drive and it will knock your socks off : )
  14. So DDR3 is not that much faster then DDR2
  15. For $40 more, yes - I would upgrade since you're already planning on purchasing a RAM upgrade anyway. DDR3 is cheaper to buy now (supply/demand, more plants actually manufacturing, etc.) so you might as well pull the trigger.

I do also agree that a quad core would give you more benefit than a RAM upgrade. Even the i3s will have better performance for day to day use though I know that wasn't on your list of things to buy. Just food for thought when you're selecting your mobo - here's a combo that would be a good start for a little over $350:

    Proc (i5):http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115072
    RAM:http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145315
  16. Alright, thanks for all your replies
  17. Yes, I don't like to resurrect old PC's, but this one is OK to do.

But, its true, just under $400 u can have 3 times faster PC.
  18. If you do go with upgrading your proc, you could even skip up to the i7-2600k/2700k but that would be a few more duckets.

If you were going to try for the i7, it might be worth it to just wait til Ivybridge launches and get the 3770k.

Definitely not necessary based on what you sad you were going to need, but just more food for thought.
