This build is for a friend which rates his games on being pretty or not so I'm trying to save him money over an i5 system and was wondering if anyone had better options and I seem to never pick good motherboards so was looking for some advise. He will be be playing 1920x1080 and the build is also he will be playing the Shogun II as his most graphical intensive game if there is a better gpu suggestion. Also I would overclock if it would boost his gaming performance to be worthwhile.

Since Shogun 2 is an RTS, such a high fps is not really needed. Unless there's a monitor much larger than 1080p, don't spend so much on graphics. Looking at the benchmarks that mdd1963 posted, the 5850 is somewhat excessive.
