Don't be silly. It's a camera, not a P&S toy.

It's not silly. Stick around. Cameras like this model will be adding all
kinds of features in the future. Silly to you perhaps, but useful to
others. But as to OP's question, not this time.

most DSLR now has that feature .. its useful for photog to speak notes onto
their image.
Nikon D2H for one has that feature iirc.

Therefore the Canon EOS 1D Mark II must be a P&S toy...

You are unfortunately right the cameras will dumb down as user get more and
more stupid. The dSLR will soon have EVF because the end-users will want to
hold a SLR at arms-length while they shoot video.

And before that the $12,000 Canon D2000 and
$22,000 D6000 and DCS-1, since they all had the
capability to record voice with images.

Audio notes are not a toy, they are a rather usefull
tool.

Nothing silly about it.
This feature can be found on the highest-end digital SLRs.

PS--I wish my 10D had this feature (and I have never owned any digital that was not an
SLR).

Yes, as more buyers enter this market the manufacturers will have but little
choice. This means that many camera models will be severely compromised in
the near future (they will do a lot but do nothing particularly well).
However, there should be an ongoing advanced amateur and bottom-end
professional market with enough money to spend to support serious designs.
This should save us from having to choose from only badly compromised
cameras.

I'm not really sure this is so (but I'm not trying to argue, only to
present another view).
Right now, it seems to me that the DR/300D is the bottom of the
(credible?) DSLR heap. Canon's move wasn't to make a less expensive,
downscale model available, but rather to provide a more capable camera
at the same price point.
Why would someone like Canon or Nikon make a less capable DSLR? I
don't think there's a market pressure to do this; given the fact that
the DSLRs on the market sell very well seems to verify this.
I'm trying to say, I guess, that (universally considered) compromised
designs of DSLRs won't show up anytime soon, as those who are looking
for such cameras can simply buy a P&S with a long zoom lens, for less,
and they are already on the market.

Not sure why the 20Da is a badly compromised camera (it has live
preview).
