Dvd is not recognized in F12 menu; cannot repair OS

Background: Dell XPS 400 with Windows XP Media Edition.
A McAfee scan found Katusha and deleted/quarantined several infected files. A re-start was requested, I complied and since then get a blue screen (stop 0x0000006B).
I know that I need to repair the Windows initialization file, but cannot read the OS dvd. The dvd does not come up on the F12 menu and is not recognized in Bios.
I have spent hours on the phone with Dell and Microsoft, with no solution.
I would be very grateful for any ideas.

  1. use an external dvd drive or a flash drive or connect the hard drive to another pc with a working dvd drive
  2. thanks; will try another computer. usb also is not recognized.
  3. no problem--i would disconnect any other hard drives in the other pc while doing it just to be safe
