Have a Biostar P35D2-A7 motherboard running windows XP 64bit, quad core Q6300 cpu, 8gigs ram. Am considering adding a USB 3.0 bay that connects through the PCI-E x1 slot.

I am relatively new to the whole USB 3.0 thing, though otherwise a well seasoned computer user. My reading has revealed much conflict and confusion on this topic, mostly because it's new and also because the industry seems to be avoiding diving into USB 3.0 with gusto.

So, I have essentially two questions. Will connecting through the PCI-E x1 slot deliver true USB 3.0 speeds? If not, will it be any better than USB 2.0?

Here is a link to my motherboard manual to assist anyone willing to help me: http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/mb/introduction.php?S_ID=295

Solution
You could use it without a problem, but you are not going to notice much (if any) speed boost over USB 2 unless you are using a external SSD or a highspeed USB3 drive.

Reasoning:

USB 3.0 = 5Gb/s = ~ 625MB/s
PCIe 2.0 x1 = 500MB/s
USB 2.0 = 480Mb/s = ~ 80MB/s
