Motherboard and cpu

Hello, i have a ASUS M5A97 AM3 AMD 970 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard with UEFI BIOS and AMD FX-8120 Zambezi 3.1GHz Socket AM3 125W Eight-Core Desktop Processor FD8120FRGUBOX i connected all the parts and it would turn on and cpu fan, but no beeps or nothing on monitor, so then i was told that i needed a supported cpu with the motherboard so i can update the bios and be able to use the cpu amd fx , is this true? also will a AMD Athlon II X2 240e 2.8 GHz Dual-Core CPU Processor AD240EHDK23GQ work with this motherboard to be able to do the update? thnx

your chip needs version 0815 and the X2 you mention is supported by 0503 which looks like the lowest one so I think you should be fine.

I think you need to make the update as the FX chip is AM3+ and I bet the board is an Am3 board that you can update through bios to AM3+
