I'm looking to replace my current card with something more powerful for rendering. Here's the PC I'll be upgrading...

MSI P6N-SLI Platinum
Kensington Q6600 quad core
4GB DDR2 (6400)

I've been comparing the Sapphire HD 6870 and the GTX 460. I see that the 6870 performs better than the 460 but all the comparisons I've found have been based on gaming. I'm purely interested in rendering performance only.

So, out of those two, which would be better? I'm a little new to cards for rendering purposes. I know that CUDA is important and that's NVIDIA. Does the 6870 have an equivelent technology?

If there's a better one than both of these in the same price range, I'd like to hear about them.

Thanks everyone.

well IMO i would go with the nvidia. in my experience nvidia chipsets seem to be better for software and development.which isn't exactly the same as gaming. The new AMD products are a bit of an unknown when it comes to software like 3ds and autocad. It also depends on what you have in the past. People seem to stick with what works for them.
