Toshiba Satellite L505D booted up with black screen. No images.

I have a Toshiba Satellite L505D-S5994 System Laptop. It shutdown normally
but when I turned it on the following day had a black screen. I see a very faint
image to enter the Windows 7 password.
It looks like the Motherboard may be non-functional but need more information
before I invest in a new Motherboard. I had lots of important data on my hard-drive and want to recover it. Should the Motherboard be the cause then I will search for a replacement.

Can I get some advice to next course of action?
