Hello,

I am currently using a Sony Vaio FW series laptop. It is a decent laptop - Core2 Duo @ 2.66ghz; 6GB Ram; Win7 64bit; ATI Mobility Radeon 4650 (I believe 1GB) and runs almost everything very well. I primarily use it for gaming, and watching movies - particularly HD movies. But lately I've been tossing the idea around of getting another monitor for dual-display - to be able to game on one screen and have other programs open on the other screen (e.g. Firefox).

While perusing different monitor options, I realized I know nothing about monitors - the last time I really put much thought into monitors was quite some time ago in the CRT age. I've tried to do some research, but I've been getting some conflicting answers to my questions, so I figured I would post the questions and try to get the most clear answers. The questions:

- My current display is at 1920x1080; if I were to get another monitor, would I also be able to run it at 1920x1080, or would it have to be run at a lower resolution?

- If I am able to run at 1920x1080 on both screens, would there be any type of performance issue based on the size of the monitor? ie would a 24" running at 1920 run just as well as a 20" at 1920?

- My computer also has an HDMI port - this would result in a better quality display, correct? If so, would there be any performance issues running say a 24" 1920 monitor through the HDMI port?

So basically this boils down to me wondering if I'm able to use a large monitor, via HDMI, at 1920 resolution with no performance issues - that is, still game on one screen and run additional programs such as iTunes, WMP, VLC, Firefox, etc. on the other screen. Of course, I don't want to buy a 24" 1920 HDMI capable monitor only to have to 'downgrade' it and use a lower resolution. That is going to cost more, so I don't want to waste money, in that regard.

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Edit:

Also meant to include this piece of information re my graphics card:
"Features: Powerplay, DisplayPort support up to 2560x1600, HDMI support up to 1920x1080 (both with 7.1 AC3 Audio), 1x Dual-Link/Single-Link DVI, 1x Single-Link DVI Support (all display ports have to be supported by the laptop manufacturer)"

You shouldn't have any problem at all. Prensently im using my laptop as a Home Theater PC, hooking it up on a 46" Sony LCD screen via HDMI.

Can you fullscreen game on 1 while using other programs on the other, though?
