The GTX 460 (GeForce 460 in your post).

The 460 and the 6770 (rebranded 5770 - GTX 460 is much faster than these) use GDDR5 memory and have a LOT faster graphichs processor than the GT 440. No way any card except the GTX 580 and the HD 6970 would make use of 3GB VRAM, and these two will make use of it only when making an eyefinity setup (HD 6970) or a 3D Surround setup (GTX 580 in SLI)

And to answer your question - usually the type of VRAM is much more important than memory size, when were talking about memory amount of 1GB and more.

GDDR2 - crap
GDDR3 - OK
GDDR5 - excellent
