Ok so i work for a company as an apprentice i will be building them high end computers which they need for computer aided engineering but theirs one problem i dont really know what the best motherboards Cpu's etc are or whether they will fit together the cost of these could go up to £7000 which is alot of money so i dont want to waste it on junk. so what im asking for is help to find components which will fit together, the company has told me they mainly want a Fast CPU, Fast imput/output and a high end graphics card, i also what to know whether i can put 2 graphics cards together and a few hard drives together etc what i would be able to do to max out this computer

My company has decided to go with Xeon x5690 processor so i need components to fit with that

They use Ansys to do engineering simulations

Solution

that MB is OK... overkill maybe, but has good upgrade potential of a second CPU :)

you will want to get the PSU that EVGA made to go with it.
EVGA Classified SR-2 100-PS-1200-GR 1200W

For ram you want 1333 CL7 ( its a corprate build, so you won't be over clocking. you want the lowest latency...

I replied to your other thread. you company really needs to hire a IT consultant, but I will help if I can.

also it would to know what system specs they are running the software on now?

To answer some of you questions a general outline of system requirements:

only one GPU and it should be one on the approved/tested list for the Ansys software. These are all professorial Graphics cards )Quadro 2000, 4000, 6000 etc...

The Xeon x5690 is a socket 1366 CPU so you will need a MB with that socket
16 MB ram fast and low latency.
SSD drive boot OS office/utility software
500GB- 1TB fast enterprise level HDD's hopefully set up in a RAID 5 (Work SPACE)
1 Quadro 2000-6000 Graphics card.
Win 7 -64 Pro or ultimate
DVD/CD Burner with light scribe.
in a good quiet case with great air flow.

G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 12GB (3 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL7T-12GBRH
Mushkin Enhanced Redline 12GB (3 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model 998981

Case - must support E-ATX motherboards:
from that link you gave me the HAF932 is the only one
http://www.coolermaster.co.uk/product.php?product_id=5363
But it not a very corperate case. try this link
http://www.quietpc.com/gb-en-gbp/products/pc-cases/fd-definexl
this will quiet the pc down. you should buy additional fans with from the same site (quiet ones)

how much hard drive space to the engineers need? how fast do the they what this to be? RAID 5 with SSD?
you should always run a boot/OS drive and a work drive on a system like this. the boot could be a small sSD and work could be a RAID 5 (speed and redundancy)
either 3 x 7200 rpm drives or 3x 10000rpm drives (WD VelociRaptors)

They have not had a lot of time to give me details but they said this if it helps :na:
Hard drive space a lot as they will be saving a lot of data and backing it up on a server
how fast as fast as possible
and they do want a raid but I don't really know a lot about raids

what would you advice be??

thank you for spending the time to help me sorry I couldn't be a bit more helpful

2 VelociRaptors for RAID 0 on each PC (I really recommend RAID 5 for critical systems like this - requires 3 Drives)

mmm Thought the SR2 was standard E-ATX.... well then this is the best of cases and the easiest to find online sources

LIAN LI PC-V2120B

it should come with all the fans required.

I also recommend a separate HDD (another Raptor) or SSD (80-120GB) as a boot device.
you should alway design system with a boot drive and a work drive when running applications like your engineers are.

RAM
Both are good take which is the best price. you must buy and install in sets of 3 sticks. the SR2 is a Triple Channel memory board. 12GB should be plenty ram. if they think more is better, buy 2 sets (24Gb) per computer.

How many sets would I be allowed to install just out of interest as the motherboard states 48gb

I think these will work too:

CORSAIR Professional Series AX1200 1200W ATX12V
OCZ ZX Series OCZ-ZX1250W 1250W
SILVERSTONE Strider Gold ST1200-G 1200W
Antec High Current Pro HCP-1200 1200W

any ATX 1000+ watt PSU that has these connections listed should work. you need 2 x 8 pin (4+4 works too) ATX/EPS for the dual CPU's on the MB
1 x Main connector (20+4Pin)
2 x 8 Pin ATX 12V / EPS 12V
in addition to the normal PCIe/SATA/Periphera connections

btw you will need heat sink for the xeon CPU.

Suggest:
Hydro Series™ H70 High Performance Dual-Fan or the H50
