I know this sounds really extremist but wouldn't it be efficient to run the 590GTX as the main dual card for a OC 4.5GHZ processor and have a 580GTX as PhysX?

:D

More about : run 590gtx main 580gtx physx

Well, if you want to waste $400 dollars it would be logical, but wasting $400 isn't logical. Anything higher that a 8800GT can handle all of your Physx needs. I have heard that the best card for a dedicated Physx card is the GTX 260. The GTX 580 is NOT meant to be a dedicated Physx card, it is a card that will handle Physx, and whatever else you through at it. My recommendation is a GTX 260 for dedicated Physx.

Using such a powerful card for such a minor role is like using a rolls royce merlin to power a water pump ect.

I don't think "efficient" is the word you're looking for, but yes, such a setup would see significantly improved frame rates in PhysX games vs. a single GTX 590.

Honestly, you'd probably get better frame rates in pretty much everything (and it would be slightly cheaper) if you used dual 580s in SLI.

(Although this seems like a lot of speculation given that the 590 isn't official or available yet)

even nowadays 9800gt is great physx card.all that technology needs is cuda.i think it would be a waste to have a dedicated physx gpu while having a gtx 580.it should do everything right with monsterous 512 cores.

You know you are a real jerk, right? He is here to ask the question, not to be a professional on the subject. :pfff:

I'd do the same thing as hostiledonut because the question is asking us to give an answer to a question which is 1. obvious and wasteful to use a 580 as a dedicated physx card, and 2. opinion on a card that is not even out

Seriously it's like asking the question whether it is sensible to ride on an unicorn's back.

If you are going to waste your money anyway, why not get 2xgtx 590 and use 1 for physx.Or 3 gtx 580s and one for physx?

You guys are all getting a little uptight over a very simple and valid question, which was acknowleged to be "extremist" in the first place:

In terms of price/power consumption vs. performance gain, it would be a bit extreme, but if neither of those factors mattered, it would be a very valid option. There would certainly be more performance gained from a GTX 580 than a GTX 450 as a dedicated PhysX card.

It's kind of a waste in terms of power consumption; if you have the money why not use a GTX 460 768 for your PhysX card for $120 after MIR? You will not notice a difference between a GTX 590 + GTX 580 or GTX 590 + GTX 460.
