Sorry.. should have engaged my brain on this before typing the last message.

The pringles can advice still holds, but you will have to get access to the
antenna connector, which is most likely located under your keyboard, and
will be a special part.

Another thought is to build a reflector, make sure the WiFi hotspot is
behind you, and move the reflector (cardboard and aluminum foil shaped like
a parabola) around behind your monitor so that your signal is boosted.

You need to work out where the antenna is located (it could be either or
both sides of your display edges)...

See this page for ideas: http://www.freeantennas.com/projects/template/

Try upstairs (get line of site) or the attic to see if you are borderline.
Try an old Satelite dish as a reflector and focus your power towards it. An
external antennae may be in order.

I've got 2 Dell 600 m--the Inspiron version, not the Latitude, but they
aren't that different. I have a home wireless network with 2 desktops, and
1 other laptop in addition to the 2 Dell's. The reception on the Dells is
poor compared to the other machines. It's worth buying an external PC-Card
wireless card--reception is a LOT better. I've been told that other laptops
with the metal alloy cases also get poor reception. Supposedly the plastic
iBook gets better reception than the alloy PowerBook with the same hardware.

The D600 has an internal WIFI card. It is accessible with a screw from
the bottom, on the left side below the PC Card slots.
THe card on mine has two cables, one is labeled "Main", the other one
"Aux". If these refer to the antennas, it would be enough with
cutting the Aux cable and connecting it to an external antenna (I
wonder where the Aux cable leads to, since the machine has no
external antenna connector). It's an intel card, so there might be
some documentation about it available.
