i got my gigabyte hd 5770 nearly a year ago and it works great. but i have always been curious about one thing. it came with a pcie to molex power adapter. it has two pcie 6 pin connections on the pcb. the adapter is one pcie 6 pin to two male molex. i have run this thing with just one molex connected. is it actually meant for two connections? like i said the thing is rock solid as is, but i am curious why the adapter is that way. and if it does actually require both connected....why is it working with only one?

It's supposed to work with both, however it appears it's working fine with one. Some 6pin adapters only require one molex; yours requires two and therefore should use both.
