Flicker at start/end of WMV files (DirectX GPU acceleration) on 5750

Hello. I just upgraded from an Asus Radeon 4670 to XFX 5750. Installed new 11.1 drivers and latest DirectX drivers. My screen flickers (quickly shifts entire screen downward about .5" with a flash of static then returns to normal) when WMV files are played. Then it flickers again after video is stopped. Doesn`t flicker while video is playing. Does this with Windows Media Player and Media Player Classic. Even flickers with YouTube video (also GPU accelerated) in 2 browsers. Doesn`t do it under AVI or other formats. Does not do it when I turn DirectX acceleration OFF in WMP or when I use VLC.

Then I swapped the DVI input, but no luck. I removed the 11.1 drivers and installed 11.2, but no luck. Still flickers with WMV. XFX tells me "A little flicker is normal. When you start a video and then stop a video it causes the video card`s memory clock speed to change thus causing the flicker."

I think that answer is BS. My 4670 never flickered. Is there anything else to try beyond upgrading the PSU? And is flicker expected behavior from too little power when watching a YouTube video?

Thanks, Chris

More about flicker start files directx acceleration 5750
  1. bump
  2. BUMP! I realized this too. ATI + GPU acceleration = annoying flickering.
  3. I upgraded to a 520W PSU last night, but no change. Still flicker with WMV and YouTube. My old ATI card was put back in -- no flicker. So the XFX 5750 will be returned today. XFX support was of no help.
  4. I returned the XFX 5750 and received a full refund from Buy.com (including free return shipping). I replace it with a Sapphire 5770 (Vapor-X) because of the good reviews. I crossed my fingers that the flicker would be gone. Strangely I have flicker but not on the same files as before. I’m hoping some of you can help me make sense of it.

With the XFX card I returned, it appeared that only WMV files were affected when GPU video acceleration was engaged. But with the new Sapphire card I can’t find a WMV file that causes flicker. Not even the exact same files that flickered before flicker now. I have found some mpg and mp4 files that flicker, so I’m curious if anyone else sees it on their ATI cards. Some of these files even cause WMP to flicker with DirectX acceleration turned off. What I see covers the entire screen (not just the video in the player) for a split second. It’s most noticeable at the top of the desktop which flashes white static both when the player is started and when it is shut down.

I tested with 3 players, but VLC 1.1.7 never flickered.
WMP = Windows Media Player 12.0.7601.17514 without GPU video acceleration
WMP+GPU = Windows Media Player with video acceleration (Tools > Options > Performance > DirectX Video Acceleration)
    MPC-HC = Media Player Classic – Home Cinema 64-bit

So all the files flicker in WMP even with video acceleration off. Only the mp4 files cause WMP-HC to flicker. Do any of you see flicker with your ATI cards? I’d love to know why this card doesn’t flicker on WMV files but the 5750 did.
