I know there have been variations of this topic discussed, but I can't find a thread that fits my needs.

Here is the situation:

I have 2 HD4670's running in crossfire mode. I would like to add my old 8500GT to my third PCIe slot, just to support a second monitor. I don't plan on doing anything with this display other than browsing and email while in game.

How will Windows 7 handle this? Can it be done? Will the HD's still run in crossfire if I have my second monitor connected to a completely different GPU?

[EDIT] - I should also note that on my Gigabyte MB PCIe 1 & 2 are x16. #3 is x8. But it seems #1 and #3 share bandwidth. So will installing in #3 effect the performance of #1?

I also have a #4 PCIe thats x4 Could my 8500GT be installed in this slot without effecting #1?

Installing a card in #3 will cause slots #1 and #3 to run a x8, which won't be an issue. You might lose a couple of frames, but that's all. Installing a card in #4 won't affect the other slots as far as I know.

I know as a matter of fact that Window 7 supports multiple display drivers, and I have heard of other people installing both AMD and Nvidia cards in the same box, so you should be fine having both cards.

For your purposes, just plug in the Nvidia card and install the drivers. This doesn't work with Vista, but it does with Win 7.

At first I glance I thought you were wanting to use it for PhysX, but since you don't want to, I don't have to break the news that the 8400 doesn't have PhysX. So all is good.

Nope, just want it to run a second display so I can surf while I am grinding away in games.

Thanks for the replies.
