CPU and heatsink upgrade

Hello everyone. I have an ancient dimension 4600 with a Pentium 4 2.4 ghz, 512 KB cache, 533 MHz bus speed.
i have a little spending money and was wondering what processors the system supports. I've read on dell.com that the system supports up to a 2.8 ghz p4 at bus speed of 800, but I've also read that it supports all p4 processors, including the elusive Gallatin CPU, and only supports l2 cache up to 512 KB if it doesn't have on board video (like mine). also, I've heard the dimension 4600 needs the bracket replaced for 3rd party heat sinks. is this true?

I would upgrade to a new system, but only have about $40 in spending cash, and won't be getting any more anytime soon.

  1. Don't spend money on this computer it isn't worth it. Going from a 2.4 P4 to a 2.8 really won't make that big of a difference. Just wait until you can manage a complete upgrade.
  2. I agree, a complete upgrade is the most logical option. If you really want to get another P4, ebay is the cheapest option for used ones. You could get a 3.2 Ghz for less than 20 bucks
  3. I just threw a p4 3.something ghz motherbd, cpu, 2gb ram, and HDD in the trash, it couldnt even run facebook exceptibly. I can't imagine how bad it must be at 2.4Ghz. I feel for ya!
  4. lol, can't run facebook, that's awesome
  5. I just remembered that I do have a random P4 2.8 ghz processor in my house
  6. Send it to TheinsanegamerN!
  7. I should!
  8. It will cost you a couple of stamps!
  9. sure, ill take it. i only build these machines for fun. i still have an original pentium mmx running at a whoping 233 mhz! it still runs 17 years later:)

actually, it runs reasonably well, just as well as my core 2 duo laptop.
  11. And an envelope and anti static bubble wrap!
  12. wow, this thread got old. well, i got a new copper heat-sink for the machine, and a upgraded CPU (3.0GHz/512/800/HT) for free, and the computer runs amazingly well. i also received an ati hd 2600 xt 512MB agp 8x card. WOOOO!
