I just upgraded my video card from an 8800 GT 512 mg to an EVGA GTX 460 SE 1 GB. I see somewhat of a performance improvement. But I was wondering if I would see a more significant one if I upgraded from Windows XP to Windows 7 64 bit, and if I added another 4 gb on RAM. What do you think? Would my fps increase with this upgrade?

So you have 4GB of ran already?

If so, then no, you will not see any performance upgrades. Most games today barely use 4GB of ram, let alone more than that. And Upgrading to WIn7 will let you use DX11, since WinXP does not support, it, but would not give you "performance" boost in most cases. Now it is a good idea to upgrade to Win7 in general as it is a good OS, and XP is truly outdated by today's standards, but you will not see performance gains.

I have only 2 gb of RAM now. So my upgrade would take me to a total of 6 gb. The only reason I have been holding onto Windows XP is that I can play most of my real, real old games like Baldurs Gate, etc. I heard that Windows 7 64 bit doesn't play the old games very well.

2GB is on the lower side, so swinging fro another 4GB and WIn7 64 bit will give you improvements than.

If you are going to re-use your 2GB, make sure that the new memory has similar specs on it (Like type of DDR, speed, timings, and voltage ratings).

2gb may well be part of your problem.

Since ram is so cheap these days, you might do better to get a supported 8gb(2 x 4gb) kit and sell your old 2gb.

Perhaps you could dual boot to run any old XP32 bit games.

I was myself very dubious about moving over from XP but i have been running W7 since the Release candidate stage and i love it.
Everything just seems easier and i did do some testing as part of a group on a different forum. We all found a slight FPS increase in games and what was not really provable but definatly seemed to be the case was that games like Crysis warhead were smoother. I had experienced input lag running under Xp (dual booting on the same system)
After that for me it was a no brainer.

Your processor could be holding you back. Download MSI afterburner after installing Windows 7 and make that SE unsuck.
