Hi there,

Would an i7 2600 make for a decent server processor?
It would need to handle about 50 or so users, run Sql Server,
and we were planning on having a VM on the go, running linux
and Asterisk as our phone server.

Good/Bad idea?

Thanks...

50 users for what?

you can actually get fairly cheap Xeon cpu's, might be worth considering if you want to make a real server even on a budget

The users just connect to the Sql server database via our system, we'll also be using the same server as the PBX server (on a VM) for the phone lines.

This is why I consider this as an option:

If you have a look at the i7 2600 on the chart, it fares better than pretty much everything in it's price range. (Even Xeons) And we're running two Xeon E5405's on one mobo at the moment (Way down on the chart.)

We're pretty much happy with the setup, but the mobo's getting dodgy, so we were thinking of using one of these instead. How would it compare to 2 old and weak Xeon's?
