Core i7 and memory

I am looking at upgrading the memory in by Dell XPS with an first generation i7 processor. I know I should take advantage of the triple channel feature so I should get at least three sticks. My main question is about the speed of the RAM. According to my computer, it can only handle RAM speeds of 800 something or 1066. Someone else I talked to mentioned that I should get sticks with higher speeds, say 1600 or something, and the i7 could still handle it. Is this true?

You could get higher speed sticks but they will be slowed down to the ''correct'' speed

Also, if you're not going to overclock, you don't need modules with heatspreaders. Just the plain looking sticks, like these:
