What is the difference between dvi and displayport?

What I really want to know is what is displayport?

Is it possible to use an old dvi connection, connecting to a new displayport?

There's a chance of it. Depends on the specs of the 2 devices in question. Should have backwards compatibility, but it's not a guarantee. Need to check the specs of the displayport device to see if it states specs.
Can you reply with the devices in question? And are you talking about Apple's MiniDisplayPort?

Nope its a Samsung Syncmaster 940B monitor. 60Hz. Its in very good condition so I will continue using it until it stops working. It will probably last a long time based on how it has been treated so far.
On the other end is probably a P8Z77 V Deluxe motherboard or a graphic card.

That I havent got yet, so thats why I don't know if it will work with a Dvi.
Maybe theres a chance that I can get an adapter for the connection.

That is really nice, it will probably beat using vga! (it being the only cable available).
