VPN...Remote Server Advice?

I have a dedicated remote server for my websites and have plenty of free space and I am looking to replace the server at one of my two business locations. The server is used for file sharing only and is very outdated. I would like to access files from both sites and easily read/write data. What would be the best method for this VPN/FTP? FTP seems extremely slow when I mount an FTP drive?

FTP - the limitations are based on your internet connection. VPN will create about a 20% overhead on your connection before you even start to access files.
