Can a incompatible cpu boot to post screen?

I bought a athlon x2 7750 to replace my broken athlon 64 x2 6400 but I just found out that I have to update my bios for it to work . When I tried booting it up nothing would come up on my monitor and I wouldn't get any beep, is this normal if the cpu is incompatible? Should it be able to boot up to the post screen atleast or the bios screen?

Alright, thanks. I Guess I'll just have to get a $10 athlon 64 3000 off ebay just to update my bios >.<.
