Will a desktop processor work in a laptop

It might but it is a horrible idea, desktop processors consume significantly more power and require much larger cooling solutions than their laptop counterparts, at 65W the i3-2120 is about double the power consumption of a standard laptop processor, it would kill the laptop cooling system and possibly melt portions of the laptop as it quickly overheated.

Laptops are specially designed systems and for the most part there are no user replaceable/upgradable parts inside, you get what you buy, dont plan to upgrade anything other than the ram ever.
