Hello, I am trying to build a server for home. I am planning on installing Server 2008 R2 and using it for database development and home media storage. My goal is not to spend more than $600.

I already tried to put together a system using Intel’s I3 2100, however, motherboards that support Server 2008 R2 are hard to find and are kind of expensive (ex: Asus P2B WS). My system with 1 TB system drive, 2 x 2TB RAID 1 data drives and 8 GB of RAM was over $800.

My next step is to try to plan a similar system build using AMD processor. Since they are generally cheaper, I want to see if I can put together a system using AMD for under $600.

Can someone please recommend a decent AMD processor and Motherboard that are least expensive and can still support Server 2008R2?

Thank you

Are you sure ASRock H67M-GE (B3) supports 2008 R2? Based on its product page http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=H67M-GE&cat=Specifications, it only supports: Microsoft® Windows® 7 / 7 64-bit / Vista™ / Vista™ 64-bit / XP / XP 64-bit

(You are correct, I was reffering to p8b-ws)

Thank you

Well, since I did not get any suggestions for AMD based motherboard that supports Server 2008 R2, I think my next step will be to buy an entry level Dell server with Xeon processor. They may be in my price range.
