680i should be on the 775 chipset. I think it will be the Core 2 Duo E8600 running at 3.33 GHZ for dual core and the Q9650 for quad at 3 ghz.

yea a quad core should be fine......im using xfx ultra 790i.....q9400 2.6 O.C to 3.8ghz

Careful with Quads on a 680SLI, they have been known to have compatibility issues. For me, stick with a fast dual and o/c the crap out of it.

stig above is right. I had a 750i board and a 6850 processor and it wouldn't work. swapped in an older processor and no problems. maybe BIOS updates caught up with this ?

I have an Asus board with a 750i chipset running a Q9650. Chances are any of the 45nm chips like the wolfdales or yorkfields will need the most current bios. Just make sure you update the bios before you install the new chip you will be stuck.
It might be better to hold the cash for an i5 or i7. You can do an i5 with ram and board that will out perform a Q9650 for around $400, while the Q9650 costs over $300.
