Can changing processors cause crashes?

Hello, I recently had to change my thermal paste, it was my first time doing it, so I accidentally ruined my processor, I had a slightly outmoded processor handy though, and I threw that in, now I'm clocking in at about 32 degrees normally, peak is 46, but that's if I'm really streatching it.

Problem is, the computer still randomly shuts down cold, just like it did when the thermal paste needed replacing, except now it's at random.

weird thing is, the lights are still on, and the fans keep going, the screen just goes black, and the keyboard and mouse become unresponsive, JUST like a thermal event.

Any ideas?

it was extremely old, before replacing it, the computer couldn't even start up fully before crashing in that manner, now that I have, it -always- starts successfully, it just randomly crashes now, which is arguably better, I suppose.
