Hi,

I have a Dell XPS 9000 system running on a I7-920 CPU. The only upgrade I have done to the system is a nVidia GeForce GTX 460. I would like to upgrade the CPU to a I7-2600K model but I'm not sure if is compatible.

Thank you for letting me know.

It's not compatible, the i7 920 and i7 2600K use different sockets.

Thank you. Will the Dell XPS 9100 be compatible with the I7-2600K upgrade? I own both models, but I was planning to do an upgrade on the old machine.

If is compatible, I wonder why Dell does not offer this processor instead of the I7-960, IMO I7-2600K is better for my video encoding needs.

No that one is not compatible either.

well that platform supports the most powerful Intel processors, the the i7 990x which has six cores and hyper-threading and would be great for encoding, that is if you have $1000 bucks to plunk down for it.

The I7-2600K performs the same as the I7-990X, when it comes to video encoding. :)
That's the reason why I settled for that model.

Ya, the 2600K is about $315 while the 990X is $1000. If the performance in 990X would be 3 times bigger compared to to 2600K I would agree, but is not. That is 10fps for an extra $600... Not to mention that if you OC the processor, you get 50fps easy without spending 6 extra bills. :)

Still, I would never OC it as 40fps is great for me. But you are right, if I want the 2600K, I need to build/buy a new PC. Instead it might be much more economical to actually buy the 990X.

Will it be compatible with my old XPS 9000?
Edit: Never mind, it looks like is not.
