I have a Dell XPS 9000 system running on a I7-920 CPU. The only upgrade I have done to the system is a nVidia GeForce GTX 460. I would like to upgrade the CPU to a I7-2600K model but I'm not sure if is compatible.
well that platform supports the most powerful Intel processors, the the i7 990x which has six cores and hyper-threading and would be great for encoding, that is if you have $1000 bucks to plunk down for it.
Ya, the 2600K is about $315 while the 990X is $1000. If the performance in 990X would be 3 times bigger compared to to 2600K I would agree, but is not. That is 10fps for an extra $600... Not to mention that if you OC the processor, you get 50fps easy without spending 6 extra bills.
Still, I would never OC it as 40fps is great for me. But you are right, if I want the 2600K, I need to build/buy a new PC. Instead it might be much more economical to actually buy the 990X.
Will it be compatible with my old XPS 9000?
Edit: Never mind, it looks like is not.
