Are there any discount camera stores in California that are equivalent to B
& H in NYC regarding inventory and prices? It seems that all of these
discount stores are located on the East Coast.

My inpression is that Samy's, in the Fairfax district of Los Angeles has
a good reputation, if not the lowest prices. The were prompt and
thoughtful in my dealings with them.

Calumet Camera comes close to B&H in pricing but not in inventory. They do
have a pretty extensive inventory, though. There are stores in Hollywood,
Santa Monica (?) Santa Barbara, San Francisco and San Diego. Maybe one or
two other locations in California, I'm not sure.

Of course if you go to San Diego for the "San Diego" store you'll miss
it by 30-something miles.

When I checked a Canon Pro1 at Samy's in December, it was $709 plus
8.25% tax. I bought it from Abe's of Maine for $660 including shipping.
In California, the tax always exceeds shipping for even modest cameras.

I can only speak about the Southern and Central California areas ...
remember that the state is something like 1,200 miles long! There are
several very well regarded stores in the San Francisco Bay Area ...

Calumet has retail stores in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Santa Ana (NOT
Santa Monica), San Diego, and Santa Barbara.

Loc

Samys has stores in Los Angeles, Venice, Santa Ana, Santa Barbara, and
Pasadena.

Bel Air Camera has a good store in Westwood Village (West Los Angeles)

Samys is my place. Great service and they match internet pricing. I
bought a lens at Calumet, and had it for a day when I decided that was
not the right lens for me. I took it back only to have them tell me it
would be 3 to 6 weeks for them to mail me a check, even though I paid
cash. They said they didn't do enough cash business to give me a
refund. After bugging them for a few days, they finally gave me a cash
refund. That was my last trip to calumet.

Ok, "San Diego County..." <G> I live in Escondido, where Calumet is
actually located.

Except for Samy's, which is still smaller, nothing really comes close.

Price-wise, even B&H isn't the cheapest, but at least service and having
just about everything makes up for that.

otherwise, you'll have to do a
shopper.com/pricegrabber.com/fatwallet.com->forums price search before
you buy.

eg. often www.fatwallet.com/forums/ -> hot deals will list super low
prices when Dell.com has their digital camera + coupon sales.

I haven't been to Oceanside Photo and Telescope since they remodeled, they
used to be very small, and largely Nikon 35mm, not much MF, or other brands
of 35mm for that matter. In fact, my impression was more "telescope" than
"photo." Have they changed much?
10% is great, if they're prices are low to start with. Calumets are pretty
comparable to B&H's.
