Hi,

i want to create a complete server hosted by myself at home to distribute the internet... so... i want to connect internet on my computer... and after that... connect my computer to router to permit 4 other computer to connect via my comp. Also, i want to be able to CONTROL the speed of every upload and download from them... and keep the biggest part of downloads and uploads speed for me... ( they are just checkin mails... im playing online and im a website manager...)... Anyone got a suggestion? Thx for ya help..

Well the first part sounds fairly straight forward. You say you want to connect 4 computers to your computer the internet? Simply connect your computer to the internet with your DSL modem/router. Then on each other computer set make their gateway your computers IP addy. You will prolly also want to make your computer a DHCP server (thats if its on all the time).
Controlling upload and download rates might be a problem, you can prolly get software to do it but I dont know of any myself.

Speed control would have to be done from the gateway (currently your linksys). There are lots of 3rd party firmwares for linksys routers but I don't think any of them do bandwidth limiting. You would need a router that does bandwidth limiting by IP. Pretty much all the linux router distros do that. You would need to put it on a regular PC with 2 nics and make that the router for your network. I use clarkconnect at home and it does a pretty damned good job of bandwidth limiting by IP.

Easiest would be to get a cheap machine, and install some sort of proxy software, such as Smoothwall. Then, hook up that baby to a switch. You can customize everything you could possibly want at that point. And no more router.

Yeh I would do what umheint0 suggests, I dont thin any router is going to be sufisticated enough to do bandwidth limiting. It would have to be done using a proxy server with software installed. Get a nice cheap VIA epia eden system...passivly cooled 4w's power usage...nice.

linksys routers usually have QoS on their firmwares, just enable it and you should be able to limit bandwidth on the LAN ports on the router...
