i want to replace my crt monitor by a led monitor .i dont know which size to choose 20 inch has only the res of 1600*900 and 21.5 inch which has 1920*1080 res.but 20inch monitor is less expensive but the other is more expensive..which to choose both have 5ms response time..for 20 inch i have chosen 2 monitors LG - LED 20" - E2041T and ACER 20" HS201HL - LED.
is hdmi slot really required for the monitor because i have it in my graphic card

Theres a special forum for monitors:
Computer Peripherals : Flat Panel Monitors

To answer your question:
I like myself some 1080p because im editting movies on my screen.
It depends what you're gonna do with it but i think its worth the extra bucks.
Your GFX card may have an HDMI slot but that doesn't mean you have to use it.
I dont know the exact differences but i think DVI is just as good as HDMI.
Please correct me on this if im wrong

go for the 1920 x 1080

but for gaming a 2ms response would be better than 5ms

well if you cant afford the 2ms one the 5ms will still be fine for gaming--would still go for the full hd 1920 x 1080

Get one your video card can handle. Some cards can handle hi res gaming and other cards better stay at 1600x900 since there are less pixels to process.

both would handle games just fine although the 2ms would be a fraction better and make sure the monitor has either dvi or hdmi because like everyone should know they are much better than the vga
