Open Display Properties Control Panel or right-click the Desktop and
select Properties. Navigate to the Settings tab, Advanced button and you
will be presented with a number of tabs. Many display adapters have a
Color tab that contains settings for Gamma, Brightness, and Contrast.
You adapter might be different so review each tab and see what you find.

In addition, there is typically a screen brightness function key, Fn-F5
or similar. Look for an icon like a small "sun" symbol. One other
setting is in Power Options where the default screen brightness levels
for Battery and AC Adapter operations can be set.

You also might have a user manual for your computer buried somewhere.
Do a search for *.pdf , *.doc and see if a manual can be found.
http://www.toshiba.com , Support, is also a good place to look for
documentation.

Only brightness is adjustable, which is really not an adjustment of the
LCD panel but which is, literally, the brightness of the backlight
behind the LCD. The adjustment is possibly available either or both of
the BIOS setup program, or the power management function of Windows.

The lack of contrast adjustment should not be viewed as a drawback. A
digitally interfaced active matrix LCD panel is, in some ways,
inherintly "perfect", unlike an older-technology dual-scan LCD panel, an
analog interfaced LCD panel or a CRT. There is no contrast adjustment
because a digital "zero-level" will produce the darkest lowlight (black)
that the panel is capable of producing, while a digital "255" will
produce the brightest {red, blue, green} that it can produce. No
contrast adjustment is necessary or would produce a better or more
accurate image. Similarly, geometry (width, height, vertical and
horizontal linearity) and convergence are "digitally perfect". Not
good, but literally "perfect", and therefore require no adjustment.

[Note, all of this applies only to digitally interfaced active matrix
LCD displays (the only kind being used in current production laptops,
however)]

The 4270 has a small wheel on the right hand edge of the screen casing
to adjust brightness.

Also I wonder if you have the DSTN model and not the TFT model screen?

If it's DSTN then the screen looks like it has a slight silver sheen
to it and the maximum resolution is 800 x 600..

From my experience of owning a 4270 the DSTN screen is utter cr@p on
these machines and give a very poor image. At times it is hard to even
see the mouse cursor when moving and any multimedia was impossible.

Maybe this is not your problem but if it is DSTN there is little you
can do to alter the quality of the image you get :(((
