What is a "platform" (re: intel)

Tom's newest article on the z77 series mobos gives a mention to "Intel's Maho Bay platform." What exactly is a "platform?" Under the Wikipedia article on Intel codenames, "Maho Bay" is listed, but it still doesn't explain exactly what a platform actually is.
