8-pin connector from PSU to 4-pin on mobo?

Novice on his first build here...

My purchased PSU provided an 8 (4x2) CPU power connection...the motherboard (msi x68MA only has a 4pin connection

Can I plug the 8 (4, rather) into the board and just leave the other to dangle? Is this safe?

yup, that's exactly what you do.
If you are woried about it dangling then just cable tie it to the side.
