CPU Windows rating dropped from 5.8 to 3.7, games lag

On the spare rig that i throw my old parts in for my stepson, which now has a AMD x2 5400 (i think, stock is 2.6ghz), things have been running really strange. Games will run kinda smooth for a while, like L4D2, Medieval 2, Killing Floor, Crysis2, but then start to get jerky/laggy with little pauses every few seconds. Usually restarting the computer makes it work agaiin for a while, but not for long.

I recently upgraded the GPU from an 8800 to a gtx260 and thought that the card might be the problem, but swapping it out for my gtx570 made no diff, and the 260 ran great in my main rig. The CPU/GPU temps, system and video memory, and GPU usage are all within reason (GPU usage is like 50%) so i know its not a heat issue and i doubt its a memory issue cause things never crash, they just dont run smooth. I thought it might be a problem with a driver of the OS so i did a fresh install of win7 x64 yesterday and its still doing it.

i decided to have windows do the Windows Experience INdex rating on the PC last night and the CPU came out with the lowest score, which i think was like a 3.2-3.7 when normally it was a good 2 points higher than that always. So i'm wondering if it could be that the CPU is going bad and somehow still running? every time i've seen a CPU go bad they usually stop working altogether tho...

I thought it might be a problem with my overclocks, but prime95 says the CPU is rock solid, and OCCT loves my GPU overclock. Even so, i reset the BIOS to defaults as well as the GPU, and the problem persists...

I'm really at a loss here, and would appreciate any input. The only thing i can think is that its somehow a problem with the PSU not putting out enough power? but usually that just causes instability, not just sluggishness... :fou:  :fou:  :fou:

*edit*

just ran WEI again and now its back up to 5.7 for cpu??!!

I'd say try with a known good psu, see how that sits...

Perhps it is downloading Windows updates and/ or doing a background virus scan...?

hey guys, thanks for the replies.

im going to try a diff PSU as soon as i can get one (dont feel like messing up the perfectly routed and cable-tied beauty of my personal rig lol)

i can say that its definitely not anything running int he background. I did a fresh win install and havent installed anything but drivers and the games and OC/monitoring software and such. When i'm not in the game the CPU idles just fine. When im in L4D2 the cpu is almost always near 100% usage, but i check taskmanager and its only the l4d2 exe thats using the cpu really. The weird thing is that even tho the CPu is almost always pegged, the game can play smoothly for a while before getting jerky.

Again, the temps are all being reported as fine, CPU is in the 50's, GPU in the 60's. I thought it might be some sort of memory leak and that the video memory was getting full and thats why it would run fine for a while then mess up, but it doesnt get much past 600mb (out of nearly 900) in L4D2... however in another game, Killing Floor, there are performance issues, and the video ram IS getting full on that, to the point where it eventually crashes and gives an "out of video mem" error. Another game i tried (medieval 2) gives a .net framework error, even though i have it installed and updated a bunch of times through win update, i even tried installing it manually... but this is a semi-common problem with the steam ver from what i gather, so probably irrelevant.

Its just so frustrating because it will play fine for a while, usually at first, and then get worse. that would make me instantly think temps if it wasnt for the fact that im watching them and they never get too high... i guess it could be NB or SB overheating, but would those throttle back and cause these sort of problems or just run until fried? so next thing would be memory, but aside from in killing floor, neither the system or video memory is getting that full, and memtest says the sys ram is good, and OCCT says video ram is good...

arrrrgh!

The PSU is an Antec TruePower (i think) 650w

The case is a Raidmax Smilidon (s/p), which has always been able to keep thinks cool enough.

Temps after running Prime95 and OCCT GPU test for 10 mins:

Core0: 56c
Core1: 53c

GPU: 74c (thats with it OCed by about 75mhz)

no errors anywhere.

Also, i disabled thermal throttling in the BIOS to eliminate that as a possibility, cause that was among my first guesses as to what this could be.

For the longest time this rig had a 8800gt in it and things ran flawlessly. I put the gtx260 in it and tested it long enough to see that it ran fine, and there was maybe a slight performance increase in the games i tested it with at first, but i was surprised there wasnt more. I just attributed it to the CPU bottlenecking the GPU. The person who the rig belongs to only really plays games on it a couple times a month and just told me about this a little while ago, so i dont really know when it started to happen.

The motherboard was replaced back in December, and things seemed to run fine (still with the 8800). then i put the 260 in there after i got my 570 and that was in early February i think, maybe late january. so there wasnt much time between the two changes in hardware for me to know for sure if its the mobo or not i guess. I did a fresh install of windows with the new mobo of course, along with the fresh install i just did this week...

The PSU is more than able to supply the demand of the rig, at least on paper... but maybe its going bad gradually and the addition of the gtx260 was enough to make it unstable? That still wouldnt explain the random drop in CPU score rating, or why the games sometimes play fine for a while and then get choppy. The computer also seems to just boot slower, like not so much during the boot animation and such, but it takes longer to finish loading the desktop. Also there is lag and stuff when i drag open windows around on the desk top, they leave behind that trail of windows, which is something i h avent seen in years....

I did noticed that after testing the gpu and stuff, the backplate cover thing on it (on the side that doesnt have the fan/heatsink assembly) is really hot when i touch it, hotter than anything on the other side of the card feels... but then again it is metal and the heatsink thing on the front of the card is covered with a plastic shroud, so that might just be normal...

-This could be a temperature issue. Please use a Afterburner or GPU-Z to Log the Temps through the game play to see if the GPU throttles itself.

- Also, you can try the same with the CPU using Speedfan or CoreTemp to see if it's throttling.

- You can examine the board to see if any of its capacitors are inflated

Good Luck

Even if it's a CPU bottleneck, slowdowns and lags shouldn't happen with the new GPU because they didn't happen with the old one. This is from my personal experience. As for the rating, that happened to me as well after installing my new 6950. I had a CPU score of 7.5 when I had my old 4870 but now, My CPU Score is 7.3. The change isn't as big as yours but it's there. I have no explanation for the scoring issue.

yeah thats what i was thinking, if it WAS running these games, like L4D2 without noticeable stuttering like this with the 8800gt, why would moving to a better GPU cause the CPU to be more of a problem? I could see the CPU limiting the GPU so that it doesnt really gain any more FPS, but i dont understand why it would be worse. It doesnt even really seem like your typical low framerate sort of lag and jerkiness.. its more like internet lag, but it happens even in offline solo games, every couple seconds theres a slit second pause.

And the temps while playing are less than running prime95 and occt, like 50-53C on the cpu and the GPU is around 65C.. its definitely not a heat issue... at least not with those two components.... would an overheating north or southbridge cause issues like this? i dont think they would cause any sort of throttling like a overheating cpu/gpu would... so they probably wouldnt cause lag, just fry...

and yeah the PSU is a good model, its the same wattage as the Antec that in my personal rig (with an OCed core2quad and gtx570) and has slightly more amps on the +12v even. But it is about 4-5 years old... same age as the CPU.

I'm having a similar problem but with my laptop, a core i5 430m now gives just 4.4 on cpu and memory, but when it was new it was about 6.5, i still havent figured it out.. what i did notice was that my cpu speed where ridicously slow ~400 MHz reading from cpu-Z, maybe you shoud try reading the speed of your cpu when it is slowing down your games?

screen, and everything, froze while running prime95 this last time, i checked the error log file to see what caused it and found there have been quite a few errors since i installed windows 7 two days ago. I should note that i do not have any sort of Creative hardware inside of this computer:

I read on another site that ASRock was going to go with Creative for the sound on this board but switched to VIA, someone said something about there still being something to do with Creative on this board, but i cant remember what offhand.

*edit* I uninstalled the audio device and am having my fried test play some L4D2 on it now, so far so good. but i'm too pessimistic to belive it will stay that way at this point, since the problems been so intermittent that its fooled me into believe its fixed a few times bbefore.

Well, played for about an hour with no audio and everything was buttery smooth. I restarted the computer and it auto detected and installed the onboard sound and so far so good after about a half hour of gaming in L4D2... so i'd say she's fixed.

Who woulda guessed...

@steiner666: Thank you for sharing the solution with us. And about the performance gain, I think it'll be more pronounced in the minimum FPS more than anything else.

It's a great feeling when you're learning something new everyday.

*facepalm* well, after a couple days of running fine, its back to doing the lag thing again. disabling/removing/reinstalling the sound hasnt helped at all this time...
