So, Everything was working swimmingly on my HP Pavillion laptop until
I get the message "operating system not found". I've never installed
or changed any hardware on the system.
After trying everything I could think of, I tried to boot from DVD-Rom.
No success at all.
Oddly enough, it seemed there was no power to the DVD-Rom drive. When
I
remove the harddrive, the DVD-ROM boots up fine, but with the harddrive
installed, the DVD-ROM does not spin at all (no power)

That's bizarre, are you (sure you are) using the correct power supply
for that machine? Maybe the hard drive is broken, drawing too much
power, and killing the power supply...
