Hi, I currently have 4 x 2 (8GB) low voltage 1600 memory. I was wondering if it's worth upgrading to 16GB DDR3 2133 (PC3 17000) memory. Newegg has a G.SKill 16GB memory for kit $119. I have a I7 2600K overclocked to 4.5 ghz. I primary used my desktop to play games and use VMs for work. Thank you.

Sandy Bridge processors have an integrated memory controller. Going over DDR3 1600 gains very little and you would only see it in benchmarks not in the real world. Just a waste of money to go with anything higher than DDR3 1600. Also going over 1.5v voids the CPU warranty.

For gaming yes. OP runs VMs for work and that is reason enough to go with 16 or even 32GB.

Thanks for the reply. I think I will stick with the 8GB. I do not run VMs while playing games.
