The big benefit of Centrino is the Pentium M processor it includes
(Centrino also includes a wireless card and a chipset, but those are
not particularly important). That CPU was designed to use much
less power than the Pentium 4 desktiop processor. It also gives off
much less heat. The result is that Centrino/Pentium M laptops can be
designed with much looser thrermal requirements, so there is more room
for a longer-lasting battery.

Boil that down to: Centrino gives longer battery life than most
Pentium 4 laptops and don't get as hot.

I would probably avoid a Pentium 4-based laptop these days, because
they get really, really hot. Even a Pentium M/Centrino laptop will
get hot, but not as bad as the Pentium 4 machines. The fan in a
Centrino laptop will probably be quieter than the one in a P4 laptop
also.

And don't be deceived by the CPU clock speeds. Pentium M clock speeds
are roughly half that of Pentium 4 chips that give roughly the same
performance (give or take). So a 1.7GHZ Pentium M is about the same
as a 3.4GHZ Pentium 4, give or take.

What about Athlon based laptops do these run as hot as a P4?
I'm thinking of buying an Athlon 64.

I've heard they run pretty cool, actually, but I'm not sure. Look for
the battery life specs from the manufacturer.

Well, Centrino (Pentium M) certainly isn't faster than Pentium 4; the
Pentium M notebooks are at least as fast, perhaps a tad faster. The
longer battery life, thinner designs, and cooler temperature comes
from the Pentium M CPU though. I wouldn't call the higher performance
Centrino notbooks "cool" though - they can get hot also. My brother's
Toshiba 1.5GHZ Centrino notebook gets quite warm, he says, but I
imagine it doesn't get nearly so warm as a comperable Pentium 4
notebook. Some of the ultra-compact notebooks with Centrino are going
to run cool but will also have much reduced CPU performance. Some of
the Sonys, for example, simply throttle the CPU to slow down when it
reaches a certain temperature - Sony's trade-off for not providing a
better cooling system.

GHz to GHz the Pentium Ms are almost twice as fast as a comparable Pentium
4.

A PentiumM 1.5GHz is comparable to a 2.4GHz Pentium 4.

I think I said that a few paragraphs ago. That doesn't mean the
Pentium M is faster than the Pentium 4 - it's just a clock speed
difference. Notice they aren't pumping out 2.4GHZ Pentium M chips?
That's because they can't manufacturer them that fast in quantity yet.

I have a Centrino based notebook with a 1.4 Ghz Pentium M.
Under light usage I can get 5 hour battery life.
The CPU fan comes on as required, such as when playing a DVD.
