[CPU support] Phenom II x4 955 BE

Hi there, I am planning to upgrade my cpu. I wanted to buy a phenom II x4 945 but it has been discontinued and I cannot buy one anymore. my motherboard also supports phenom II x4 955 but only the 95w one which is also phased out.

I am thinking of buying a Phenom II x4 955 Black Edition for my upgrade but my problem is in the website of my mobo, it says that recommended cpu tdp to be used is 95w only. will my mobo be able to run the 955BE without problems? will underclocking it affect tdp? I am thinking of underclocking it to 3.0ghz to be able to run it, is that possible?

I hope someone could help me, thanks. my mobo is am2+. will amd release more 95w cpus that is backwards compatible with am2+?

my mobo is a biostar MCP6P M2+

  1. I think it is best for the AMD followers to come and tell you that building an AMD rig right now is not a smart move, if you are prepared to wait a month or so and see what the Bulldozer does then perhaps, but Phenom 2 technology is old and innefficient in comparison with the Intel Sandybrigde Core processors.

Sound advise would be, if you are in a hurry then go for intel, if you are patient enough to wait out, then AMD might have a better economical solution. I was also considering trying a second AMD build, but it appears to be dead end right now.
  2. thank you for your reply. yeah my rig is a little bit old, i was hoping to upgrade its cpu because of low budget (i am still studying). I think the bulldozer is am3+ which i think wont run on my mobo.
  3. You should be able to use this proc:
    $100 AMD Athlon II X4 640 Propus 3.0GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core (not a BE, but it can still OC a little)

as for future upgrades, here are a few to consider:

    $93 GIGABYTE GA-880GMA-USB3 AM3+ AMD 880G HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Micro ATX

    $23 G.SKILL Value Series 4GB 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333
  4. how does the athlon II x4 640 compare to phenom II x4 945 and 955? will its lack of L3 cache affect performance? I use my pc mostly for games. i'm not planning to OC or anything. I just want the best quad core that my mobo can handle. thank you.

The lack of L3 cache shouldn't be too much of an issue, but I did find an OEM quad that is 95W, and has L3 cache if you want it. It just needs a HSF.
    $90 AMD Phenom II X4 925 Deneb 2.8GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core

Pick up a CM 212 cooler
$28 COOLER MASTER Hyper 212 Plus
