This is in BG1

How does a kobold using a short bow and a normal arrow
do 8 points of damage to my helmet-wearing character with
one shot?

'Cuz he/it was unlucky. It could've been 16 points. :(

Not as tough as goblins in BG2.
BG2 goblin archers shoot composite longbows which require 18 strength.

:( indeed!

An arrow, according to the description anyway, does 1-6 points
of damage. A short bow doesn't inflict additional damage. My
character was wearing a helmet so there's no critical hit modifier,
right?

How does it reach a max of 16 points of damage?

IMHO part of the fun of BG1... Strolling around in the big open and on every
map there's a chance of running into Kobolds who can be seriously lethal
till your reach level 5+. Till now... I like BG1 above all others, that is..
till the city maps.

Yup it's the same for me too,

and then there's those loatshsome cowardly hobgoblins and their
poisoned arrows and itchy feet.

and spiders!

The wilderness areas add a lot to the game for me too, though I
do like the change of pace the towns give. I enjoy pretty much all
aspects of the game up until the final few battles. Oh, I'd like more
opportunities to talk, sneak, or steal my way to victory but that
would pretty much be a different game entirely.

And there's also something particularly pleasing about guiding a
pathetically weak low-level group through the various situations.

ah, if there were only more mods for BG1...

You know that characters can have Weapon Specialisation? Maybe, just
maybe, monsters (including kobolds) can specialise too... which would
explain the 8 points.

Critical Hit, doubles the damage, which would explain 16 doubled up from
8 - I don't believe helmets block EVERY critical hit, they just stand a
*chance* of blocking it, is my best guess.

Yeah, I entirely ignored the specialization bonus.

Anyone here know if a helmet blocks every critical hit?

I'm hoping that 8 is the max damage for a character who is wearing
a helmet and 16 for a character who is not wearing a helmet.

Because there are other modifiers, like a Strength modifier (I don't
know much about AD&D), check the back of the manual which will tell you
what modifiers exist. How else does my level 2 Minsc hit with a 2
handed sword for thirty-something points most times :)?

ok, looking at the BG2 manual (I seem to have misplaced my BG1 manual) -
if kobolds are considered to be specialized in short bow they'd get a +2 to
damage, and if they're at grandmastery level (which they had better not be!)
they'd get +3 to damage.

So, ok I can see 8 or even 9 damage (ridiculous as that would be) but 16?

>like a Strength modifier (I don't

The specialization bonus I certainly forgot about, but since missle
weapons don't get a strength modifier I can't think of anything else
that could boost up the damage total.

I doubt helmets block critical hits from MISSILE weapons.

Helmets completely negate critical hits.

Probably many, many, many hours of gameplay experience ;)
I can confirm this too.
Any helmet/ioun stone/mask put in the helmet slot negates critical
hits.

SPOLIER SPACE

In fact, you can use this to cheat negation of critical hits for
wizards too,

There are many, many examples in which the game "cheats" with regard to 2nd
edition rules (which is what it is based upon). For example, why is it
that every NPC wizard you meet happens to be at least level 9, because he
is launching 5 magic missles at you, but when you kill him, you get
experience as if he were level 5?

As for the kobold thing, someone mentioned strength modifiers. Under
normal rules no bow makes use of strength modifiers unless it is
composite. Whether these rules were used in the game I do not know(But
I'm fairly sure they were not). So normally, kobolds should only be able
to do 1-6 damage, and if I recall correctly, they actually have a strength
PENALTY from having only a 7 strength, so they wouldn't be able to use the
bow effectively.

Anyway, my point being the game cheats, repeatedly, bending or breaking
most of the rules in the enemies favor. This is not a bad thing at all,
since the game is not very challenging for me anymore even with very
difficult mode and maximum hit points settings on.

Kobolds are indeed, dirty rotten yelping cheaters.
