i was thinking of upgrading my phenom x4 9850 to something like phenom 2 x4 955 now my motherboard supports am2 am2+ and am3 sockets so would i be able to keep my current cpu cooler or would i have to get a new one also would it matter if i ran an am3 cpu like the phenom 2 with ddr2 ram
this is currently what im running
phenom x4 9850
gtx 550 ti
cant remember the name of my current cpu cooler its something like coolmax but is socket am2+
Your mobo support the Phenom II X4 955 without problems regarding the cooler, AM2-AM2+ and AM3 socket are the same size, the only difference is the pin out configuration, so, you can use the cooler too without problems.
Yes You Can Use The Cooler, But Even Though Upgrading To An X4 955 Wun't Be Much Of A Difference If You Run It At Stock Speeds.
You Must Overclock The processor and your motherboard also is a good overclocker. But for overclocking, you must get a more expensive and better cooler. Like The Coolermaster Hyper 212 Plus!
maybe i might just get a new cooler too iv always wanted to try over clocking but i am scared to do it lol if i did try to would my power supply be able to handle it its corsair cx500 is there any difference between the phenom 2 x4 955 965 and 970
The X4 965 Is Basically An Already Overclocked 955, No Need To Spend The Extra Money For It.
The 970 Is Again Clocked Higher At 3.5 Ghz, But It Uses 125W Power Where as the c3 Stepping version of the 955 will use only 95W.
Performance wise, there will be very very less difference among the three.
Pick The Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition C3 Version And The Overclock It After Buying A New Cooler.
And Yes, Corsair Is A Good Brand, Its One The Most Trusted PSU's Around The World. It Will Handle Everything Pretty Good.
