I tried playing Dead Space 2 on my system and the video was horribly choppy. My setup: Gigabyte GA-G41M-Combo, Intel Core2 Quad Q9400 2.666 GHz, 4GB (2x2GB)1066MHz DDR3, 2x500GB Barracuda HDD, .....300w psu (looking to upgrade). Money is a factor!!! Please help, not sure if I should go nVidia or ATI.

300w really limits your choices. 5670

I want to buy a better psu as well, I'm just on a real tight budget. Trying to do it with the least amount possible.

Get a 550w antec unit and a cheap 5670 or a if possible gts 450 or 9800gt. Better than nothing and allows for future upgrades with less concern about power.

Does the brand make a big difference for the psu?

Ok, so I got a Coolermaster 500w
http://www.coolermaster.com/product.php?product_id=3738...
Is that ok?
I'm a little concerned with the fan opening on top, my case doesn't have an opening on top.
The salesman at Fry's said it didn't matter but it just feels like I would be suffocating it.
Am I wrong?

If that power supply works for you, you can't go wrong with an HD 6850. Unless you're playing at 1080p or above and want high settings + 60fps on all games.

What is your budget? I can help you find a good GPU and PSU.

I'm hoping to stay around the $100 range for the GPU, so the GTS450 looks good to me. It can be slightly more.
That PSU cost me $40 and I still have a rebate for $10 so I don't think I can get a better PSU for $30.
I am still concerned will the top mounted fan on the PSU not working well with my sealed case.

Unless you have some kind of horribly ghetto case the PSU can be mounted upside-down. They are made to go either way so that isn't an issue.

I'm using a Dell Vostro 200 minitower case. That and the optical drives are the only stock hardware, I like the sleek glossy black look. I'll get a better case later when I build a real gaming system. This is my first complete build so I'm taking baby steps. It's been a good learning experience.

Yeah, after looking it up you shouldn't have a single problem mounting the PSU upside down. It might actually help a little.

A hd5770 will beat a GTS 450 and a good $40 PSU like corsair Seasonic, OCZ, are silverstone will be good. XFX is good too.

OK, got the 500w Coolermaster in. It only goes one way and the fan is actually on the bottom not the top. I just assumed it was on top because of the picture on the box. So everything is ok, now I just need to decide on a GPU. So a HD5770 is better than a GTS450? I see that they're roughly the same price. Why do you prefer it HostileDonut?

So, they have a few watt different TDP, (same heat output and power consumption) Nvidia has CUDA, which is nice, but not worth it, the hd5770 is a better card in performance. One reason I would buy it is because it is AMD, but even an Nvidia lover should get it over a GTS 450 because it is a better GPU.

OK, I might get that. One question. I haven't heard of "HIS", and I have seen alot of different brands that make the same cards; XFX,EVGA,ASUS,MSI..etc.., so does the brand make a difference and if so is HIS ok?

His is like Powercolor, maybe a little bit more reliable.

HIS is pretty good, I would get almost bought one, but saw a sapphire and got that instead.

Just don't buy Palit or any other junk brand because many often have a habit of failure. Powercolor can be ok sometimes but one has to be very picky. HIS has done some great cards in the past but also some very flaky ones. Asus and XFX are great brands.

Sapphire on this one due to the cooler. Most people these days sadly have little or no concept of quality any more. Avoid the passive card at all cost while the other Gigabyte card with the batman shroud it terrible.

I'm thinking about not waiting for an online order and going to my local "Fry's" store and picking one up so I looked at there website to get an idea on what they have. What do you guys think about these?

I went to my local Fry's this morning and I I only found 2 5770's which were returned open items, however they had allot of nVidia cards. Gts 250, 450, gtx 260, 460, 550 for about $100-160.
How does the 5770 do next to the gtx 250, 460, 550?

Personally the GTX 460 is a great card and own one my self however just don't get the idea of getting a new cooler down the road. The 5770 is a much easier card to power and cool. This september I am thinking about splurging once again on another card and would get the Sapphire card due to the cooler and it being easy to mod for slightly better cooling. The others I already know are mostly but problems down the road due to hot spots ect. If you want nvidia only consider the 550 if you can get it cheap however it isn't all that much faster than a 5770. Personally I would gladly settle for either a gtx 460 or a 5770. gts 450 is not all that great considering how it dips down to the gts 250 level performance while still under performing a gtx 260.
