long story short... built a system a couple weeks back for use at work. went with the A8 3850 with an MSI motherboard and 16 (4x4GB) HyperX DDR3.

Been fighting with it for about 10 days; cannot figure out why it locks up at random times (during burn-in using Sandra). I need to move forward and will be ordering a replacement board and CPU tonight or tomorrow (I extensively tested the RAM with memtest for several hours; I dont think I have a memory problem).

I run TONS if applications at work (mostly proprietary calcuation software) and typically have at least a dozen applications running. Given my recent A8 encounter, I will likely avoid another one... I dont want to buy a 79 dollar cheapie for troubleshooting; I am basically conceding and moving on.

if I had to blow 200 to 300 on an MB/CPU combo, what would you suggest?

The A8 series is designed to be an inexpensive entry level desktop set-up not a workstation. There could be BIOS or other issues with the new A8 series mobos??? Depending on what you need for number crunching power an AMD Phenom II X6 1075T (or 1090T) and a Gigabyte GA-990XA-UD3 should work wonders. You can save a few $$$ by using the same GA-870/880 series Gigabyte Mobo but the 990 chipset Mobos will be able to use the new AM3+ Bulldozer CPUs if you decide to update in the future.

While you can find cheaper hardware my experience is that this is a very reliable and performance oriented combo at a very good price.
