I would like to get recommendations for a laptop with the following
objectives/requirements:

1- To be used primarly for development using Java and Visual Studio.
2- Good image quality.
3- Good keyboard (if possible with the same key layout for cursor keys
and page up, page down, home insert, delete and end of a standard
desktop keyboard.
4- Good battery life

Thanks for your attention

Nope... look at nr 3. More in the way of ThinkPads and Dells.

1 - Most laptops have the same or similar chipsets, so the differences
(for same CPU) shouldn't be big enough. Don't even think of anything
than a Pentium M, it is amazingly fast for code (far better than desktop
procs) due to its architecture.

2 - Depends on what you like. Sony X-Brites and IBM Flexview are the two
(good) opposites - The first is glossy bright and with a large viewing
angle, the second is matte bright with a smaller viewing angle. If this
is important for you, first look at them from close and then decide. As
for the resolution, dont even bother with 1024x768 and go for much
higher res. I use an SXGA+ (1400x1050) laptop for coding, looks great.

3 - IBM Thinkpad, nothing comes close. Powerbooks are quite nice, but I
assume you want an x86 laptop.

This is directly related to (2), as a bigger and brighter screen draws
significantly more power. Better to get a laptop with option for extra
or larger batteries (IBMs and Dells come to mind), my IBM T42 should do
about 9-10 hours with the 9-cell and an ultrabay battery. YMMV.
