Hey guys so my mom asked me to help build my father an htpc for his birthday coming up, My budget is 500 canadian, but of course I want to go as low as possible with similiar results.

Basically this is what I came up with

The most this baby will be doing is playing blu-ray movies at 1080p. My main concerned is whether the igp is enough or if I should throw in a discrete card.

Any feedback is appreciated, thanks

  1. Not to be lazy, but there's a pretty good combo at right now: It's sandy bridge, in budget, and has all the stuff you need. Grab a cheap 5450 to alleviate all worries. And there we go! That leaves roughly $100 for a monitor :D
  2. Thanks for bringing that up, but theres no dvd driver?

Ahh yes, That throws it over budget.... Ok, let's discuss the build you put together. Everything looks good, except there are 3 things.
Get a tri core, only $20 more and offers much higher performance.
Grab a Samsung Spinpoint f3, they are currently only $20 dollars more than the one you listed for 3x the space.
The last thing is, you might consider grabbing 4GB of ram. It won't necessarily be needed, but it might help speed things up a bit.
Other than that, looks pretty good.
