GTX 460 SLI or 5870?

I recently made a topic about how I wanted to add another GTX 460 to my rig and that I couldn't decide on a power supply.

I was looking around a bit and found that I could get a new 5870 for $200 straight from newegg; this made me rethink the whole idea...

So here's the problem, which is more worth it? Obviously 2 GTX 460's are better but that would require a new power supply and having to actually run Sli. With a 5870 I would be able to keep my current PSU and still get much better performance in games.

I'm really stuck so I thought that I would ask you guys...

Thanks in advance

More about 5870
  1. Could you list your system specs first? That would be a great help, because there are actually quite a few things to think about. Thanks.
  2. Also post the resolution you play at
  3. GTX 460 1gb SLI is best; what is your budget?
  4. I'm trying to spend under $230. I figured that I would be able to get around $70 for the GTX 460 I have now.

    Specs:
    I5 750 @ 3.8ghz
    MSI P55-Gd65
    8gb DDR3 ram
    OCZ ModXstream pro 600w
    Silverstone Raven RV02
    Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

I figured that the harddrive was irrelevant so I didn't bother. I play on 1920 x 1080. I was wondering if any of you knew how overclockable the 5870 was too.

    Thanks for the help.
  5. Gtx 460 sli with 1gb cards is the way to go.Look at this article to see the performance difference between the 2.Also with the 2 gtx 460s,if you find a physx game that runs fin without physx with 1 card and you want to boost your performance with physx, you can dedicate one of the 2 as a physx card. That and the fact that you have 3d support and cuda.
About the overclockability of the 5870,while most overclock decently, the performance increase you get doesn't get close to the performance of gtx 460 sli(unless you use ln2 and oc to the heavens of course).
  6. Thanks for the reply. I should add that these would be the 768mb versions. I don't really know how much performance differs between the too though... It still sounds like it's better to spend the extra money and buy another one.
  7. I guess that pretty much settles it. Another GTX 460 it is :D
  8. even 2 768mb 460s will be better than a 5870, but you should better get the 1gb versions, they are more future-proof and a little more stable i guess
