are the LGA771 xeon processors compatible with the 1366 socket? I was looking into using a xeon but the socket the 5060 is listed as 771. but I know that the 1366 model came after the 771 so I was wondering if there was any backwards compatibility. such as the AM2+ models are for AM2.

nope - sorry bud. The 771 and the 1366 do not go together. They have completely different sockets and different amount of pins coming off them.

as their names say, the LGA771 has 771 pins while the LGA1366.. well.. you get the picture (1366 pins ;) )

The Intel® Xeon® processors that use a socket 771 share a common microarchitecture with the Intel Core™ 2 Duos and Intel Core 2 Quads. The socket 1366 is used on the 1st generation Intel Core i7’s and the Intel Xeon 5500’s and 5600’s processor. The biggest reason for the change in pins between these sockets is the integration of the memory controller and support for triple channel memory that the processors that used socket 1366 would take advantage of.

I guess I could have said this a little differently, but the Intel® Xeons® that use Socket 771 such as the Intel Xeon 5000’s, 5100’s, 5200’s, 5300’s and 5400’s share a common microarchitecture with the Intel Core 2 Duo’s and Intel Core 2 Quads. While there are some differences they have the same microarchitecture. Now the Intel Xeon 5500’s and 5600’s share the same microarchitecture with the 1st generation Intel Core processors of which the Intel Core i7’s share the same socket but are not always compatible from one board to another. Processors sharing the same microarchitecture do not mean that they are compatible with other processors with that same microarchitecture.

Hi - I have a Dell Precision 690 with the MY171 LGA771 motherboard - it has a single Xeon 5110 (1.6Gh) processor in it. I would like to upgrade to two Xeon dual processors at a faster speed but cannot find info on what processors/speeds this mb will accept. I had a real good deal offered on a pair of Xeon 3.0Gh 5060 (? = sure about the 50 not the 60) (came out of a Precision 690, don't know what mb) - I believe they are LGA771 socket but don't know if they are compatible with my mb (i.e. the Xeon 50 series - and what about the 52, 53 and 54 series?). I imagine this is all pretty simple and obvious to you guys who specialize in this but it's all Greek to me and the info to self-educate just doesn't seem available - or I just can't find it. Thanks for any help. Stephen.
I'm running WinXP SP3, 2GB ram, BIOS Rev.A08 - I'd like to add some memory too - this board supposedly takes up to 64G but I'd be happy with 4 to 8 - would 6 or 8 be recognized?
