Is the ati 5000 series better than the 6000 series

No, the 6000 series has improved dual card scaling and much improved DirectX 11 tesselation performance. On the other hand, the 5000 series is more power efficient.

The 68xx series was meant to be a replacement for the 57xx series, the 69xx series replaced the 58xx series, thats where a lot of the confusion comes from.

They have some arch differences, something to do with VLIW 4 vs. 5, or something. For once, I don't feel like looking it up.

Only the 6950/6970/6990 have the arch differences. The 68xx are exactly like the 58xx series except with less shaders

Right on. The 6800's are more like the 5800's than the 6900's. In any event, I don't think the much older 5000 series is going to benefit from any driver updates. In fact, after reading the recent Tom's article, I don't think the 6000 series is going to get much of one either.

In that link at the top is a index of the pages in the article. The last link says: "Graphics Card Hierarchy Chart". If someone wanted to know about GPUs, one could simply look through the chart, or wait for someone like me to simply post a link to that page.

also, specific cards is more helpful. A 6990 is better than a 5570, but a 5970 is better than a 6850. It is all in context.

^Yeah, but DA2's tesselation is piss poor, so is Metro's (character's only) and Dirt 2 I don't think uses it... if it does it's also very minor.

Battlefield 3 will use it though!
