is the ati 5000 better than the 6000 series how do they rank how good there cards are, the higher the series the better or is it just mixed

Only the 6950/6970/6990 have the arch differences. The 68xx are exactly like the 58xx series except with less shaders
Right on. The 6800's are more like the 5800's than the 6900's. In any event, I don't think the much older 5000 series is going to benefit from any driver updates. In fact, after reading the recent Tom's article, I don't think the 6000 series is going to get much of one either.

It's amazing how many people post without simply looking through the site. On the home (index) page it shows a link titled "Best Graphics cards for the money, March 2011". In that link at the top is a index of the pages in the article. The last link says: "Graphics Card Hierarchy Chart". If someone wanted to know about GPUs, one could simply look through the chart, or wait for someone like me to simply post a link to that page.

I saw your link, but I was going to post it anyway, because my glorified speech wouldn't have meant anything if I didn't post the link at the bottom. I got what you are saying, and I read everyone's responses. My first post was in direct response to the OP, unlike this one, which is in response to you anort3. Good attempt at a callout though.
