Hello,
I have a opportunity to pass on my 8800 gts and would like to replace it with a newer graphics card with a similar or greater graphics power but less heat and power consumption. I do not play much games any more and not any of the new titles so I do not need higher spec card , just something more modern, using less power, cooler and quiter. Looking at £80-100 range. Do not care much if Nvidia or ATI

I agree with Greg, then, 5770 would do you wonders. Exchange rates favor you British types (lucky bastards), so you SHOULD be able to find one in your price range.

Both are stock clocks, both 1GB. I do not believe in paying premium price for factory overclocked when You can do it Yourself

Question is if HD5770 is worth the 16% increase in price over GTS450. Somehow it seems GTS 450 is better value for money. How do they compare in power consumption, heat and noise both in idle and under load

The 450 takes a bit more power under load than the 5770, but runs cooler (both are fairly low-temperature under load, though). Also keep in mind that just like you can OC a 450 to overtake the 5770, you could OC the 5770 to surpass what the 450 can put out. Either is a good option for you.

At this point, I'd almost suggest you just select whichever one you can multi-card (in case the itch gets to you) down the line; if you have a mobo that can CFX, go with the 5770; if SLI, the 450. If neither... tough call, but I'd personally prefer the 5770's slight performance edge. If every dollar (pound, in your case) is tight, then the 450 is the winner.
